How to make a chocolate pudding cake: Mary Berry’s recipe can be prepared in 10 minutes

There is nothing better at the weekend than a chocolate dessert, and you can make a incredibly tasty treat using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

Mary Berry’s ‘indulgent chocolate surprise’ is a simple pudding recipe made of a simple sponge cake and a decadent chocolate sauce which uses boiling water to make it creamier.

She said: “This is a chocolate sponge with a surprise chocolate sauce. Don’t be alarmed by the amount of water used in the recipe.

“The rich sauce will magically appear bubbling under the baked surface of the sponge once it is cooked.”

Preparing this pudding takes less than 10 minutes before it is placed in the oven to cook for 25 minutes, making it perfect for anyone craving something sweet and homebaked without spending too much time baking.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180C (160 Fan/Gas Mark 6).

To make the sponge cake, place the caster sugar, semolina cocoa powder and baking powder in a bowl.

Next, crack the eggs into a jug, add in the melted butter and beat the mixture with a fork until fully blended.

Pour the jug mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and carefully mix until you have a smooth cake batter.

Grease the ovenproof tin with butter and then pour the mixture into the tin. Smooth the surface of the batter to make it nice and even.

To make the sauce, place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix until smooth, then pour it all over the sponge mixture.

Place in the oven and bake for around 25 minutes or until the pudding has risen at the top and the sauce is bubbling.

Once ready, take out the oven and dust with icing sugar, and your mouthwatering chocolate pudding is now ready to serve.
