Mumbai, April 24: In a landmark initiative, India is reportedly set to overhaul its footwear sizing standards by introducing a new system named ‘Bha’ (भ), representing Bharat. This move aims to replace the current reliance on UK/European and US sizing systems with a more localised approach that considers the diverse foot dimensions of the Indian population.
The proposed ‘Bha’ system results from a comprehensive pan-India survey that measured the foot sizes of Indians across various age groups. Unlike the existing Indian Standard IS 1638:1969, which aligns with European and French Standards, ‘Bha’ will incorporate both foot length and width to ensure a more comfortable fit for consumers. The ‘Bha’ shoe sizing system is a simplified model featuring eight sizes tailored to fit various age groups. This innovative system is expected to improve the fit for an estimated 85% of the Indian population. The ‘Bha’ system aims to streamline footwear manufacturing by removing half-sizes, simplifying production. Scheduled for implementation by 2025, ‘Bha’ will undergo rigorous user trials involving approximately 10,000 participants aged between 5 and 55. These trials are expected to last a year, and the outcomes will be meticulously analysed to fine-tune the system.
