There will be brighter skies across Scotland and sunny intervals developing more widely across the UK through the morning.

But strong winds are expected in places, especially on eastern coasts.

The Met Office said tonight will be cold under clear skies and lighter winds, with a patchy frost likely in sheltered spots.

Moving into the weekend, Saturday will have a chilly start with temperatures hitting 0C in Settle, North Yorkshire, at 5am.

A mostly dry day will follow with variable cloud and some sunny intervals.

A little rain is likely across Scotland later, the forecaster added.

It will be cloudier on Sunday with patchy rain possible, mainly in the east.

The Environment Agency has issued four red flood warnings for the country today, while there are 57 alerts in place.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin gave his weather forecast for the London Marathon 2024.

He said: “If you’ve been training hard for the marathon you’ve probably been training in the rain and under the influence of low pressure.

“Our weather patterns are shifting this weekend and this high moving in will bring many of us a fine day on Saturday.

“Now that high is sticking around for Sunday and the big race but as it starts to edge back a bit further west, it does mean across the southeast there will be a bit of a northerly breeze and quite a lot of cloud around.”

Similar conditions will continue into the new week with sunny breaks at times.

In its long-range forecast from April 23 to May 2, the weather forecaster said: “This period will be dominated by high pressure to the northwest of the UK and lower pressure to the southeast over the near continent, and the extent to which of these systems dominates at any particular time.

“The wind will probably therefore predominantly come from a northerly or easterly direction, so temperatures at least in the east are likely to remain around or a little below average, with any warmer conditions generally further west – and with the sun quite strong, it could feel very warm at times.

“There should be a reasonable amount of dry weather around, especially in the north and west, but some rain or showers are likely at times, most-likely in the south and east, but amounts are expected to be modest.”
