‘Super easy’ cooking method shows we have all been cooking broccoli wrong

Broccoli seems like a simple enough vegetable to prepare, but it turns out that most of us have been cooking it the wrong way.

After spending years preparing dinner, you may feel confident that you know how to cook this green veggie, but you are not meant to cut it up before you begin boiling or steaming it.

Sidney, a dad who posts life hacks on social media, was amazed to discover that placing the whole broccoli in a pan will make the florets very easy to cut off once they are done cooking.

In a video on TikTok, Sidney said: “Here’s something I didn’t know until I was in my 30s: broccoli should be chopped after it’s boiled?”

He simply places the broccoli floret-side down in a pan of boiling water and after ten minutes he removes it with a set of tongs.

Sidney cuts up the whole broccoli with one simple motion since the florets become extremely tender.

He said: “It’s already falling off! Look at that, perfect.”

This simple cooking method is not only quick but saves time in preparing food and means there is less cleanup required when cooking.

In Sidney’s comment section, people were surprised by the easy method and many people could not believe they had not thought of it before.

One person said: “This has made my life so much easier.”

Another person commented: “I went to culinary school and didn’t know this!”

Someone else said: “Remember to eat the stem, it is more nutritious than the florets.”

MyRealFood, a healthy recipe app, has also confirmed that this method makes cooking much easier.

In a video on their social media, a chef from the app said: “Did you know about this trick for cooking broccoli? All you need to do is submerge the head of the broccoli in boiling water and then you can cut it off super-easy and super-quick.”

However, the app recommends saving the broccoli stem and also cooking it further to make it a part of a tasty meal.

The chef explained: “You can also use the [stem] to make something really delicious as a side for your meal.

“Just slice [the stem] into little slices, put it in the frying pan with some soy sauce, and there you have it.”
