Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond: Jimmy Sheirgill’s role of film script approver in Ministry of Defence makes for a great watch : Bollywood News

The ghastly 2019 Pulwama attack led to the death of several CRPF soldiers. It saddened the whole country and also led to rising tempers as the citizens asked for revenge. This year, two films have already touched upon this episode – the Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone starrer Fighter and Varun Tej-Manushi Chhillar starrer Operation ValentineRanneeti: Balakot & Beyond, which has released today on Jio Cinema, is also centred around this attack. However, the web series goes beyond the attack and the surgical strike conducted by India at Balakot, Pakistan. The characters are also well-etched and one of them that stands out is that of Kashyap Sinha, played by Jimmy Sheirgill.

Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond: Jimmy Sheirgill’s role of film script approver in Ministry of Defence makes for a great watch

We have often seen patriotic characters faltering on the field and then either being demoted or suspended. Kashyap Sinha is no exception. After an operation in Serbia goes awry, he’s taken off the field. He’s asked to work from the office of the Ministry of Defence, Delhi and approve film scripts! This is probably the first time that the protagonist is shown indulging in such work in a film/series.

The first episode depicts Kashyap Sinha watching a film where the protagonist goes over the top while making an attack. Kashyap rejects the film, citing that officers, in real life, don’t shout this way and also showing Indian officers attacking a foreign embassy can’t be shown on screen. When the director argues that experts told him that his depiction is realistic, Kashyap hits back with hard facts. Scenes like this enhanced the impact of the show.

Since 2020, the Ministry of Defence has made it clear that any film or web series based on the Army or any other defence wing, should be aired only after the makers secure a no-objection certificate from the government.

As per an article in The Print, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), along with another department called the MI-11, clear films dealing with the Army. They make sure that the image of the Army is not distorted or projected in a wrong way.

Also, as per current guidelines, the producer has to first submit an affidavit stating the details of the film, the script, the production company involved, the likely release date etc. They can also state if they require any equipment from the Army. Moreover, the producers are required to then sign an agreement with the government, submit a bank guarantee, and furnish an indemnity bond. Once the film is completed, producers have to submit the final copy to the Defence Ministry before release. If there are portions the government considers ‘unsuitable, undesirable, improper and imprudent’, producers have to remove them.

After the government is satisfied with the film, an NOC is provided after which the film is passed by the Central Board of Film Certificate.

Not just the unique character work, what also works is that Jimmy Sheirgill shines in the role. The way he has gone into the skin of his character is seen to be believed. Be it outsmarting the enemies, hitting them back with clap worthy dialogues, dealing with his traumas or getting into action mode, the actor has delivered one of the best performances of his career.
