DC’s solicitations for July hint that Poison Ivy may not survive the end of her own solo series. The upcoming 24th issue of Poison Ivy is being labeled as “The Death of Pamela Isley”. Throughout the solo series, from G. Willow Wilson and Marcio Takara, the titular character has been dealing with a lot. Currently, she is dealing with another plant-based villain and his evil plans. Now, it feels like all of this has been leading the villain to an untimely demise.
The Death Of Poison Ivy?
According to DC, Poison Ivy #24 will continue to show Dr. Jason Woodrue AKA the Floronic Man make his plans come to life. With the odds in his favor, Poison Ivy’s powers and allies are not enough to stop him. Plus, he is turning Ivy’s own victims against her through his devilish plan. With time and her own supply of blood quickly running out, a final plan forms. To bring the outbreak of the parasitic fungi, Ophiocordyceps Lamia, to an end, Ivy must kill her own creator and herself.
Villain Turned Hero
The character of Poison Ivy first debuted in 1966’s Batman #181. The issue featured a story from Robert Kanigher and Sheldon Moldoff called “Beware of…Poison Ivy!”. In this story, Pamela Isley gained her plant-based powers through poison. That poison came from a professor and lover. However, the Pro-Crisis version of the character gained her powers differently. She took part in an experiment under Woodrue’s watch. When the results left her in a coma, Woodrue fled. When she awoke, she found her blood had been replaced with chlorophyll and she gained power.
While Poison Ivy began as a villain, recent stories and events have pushed her into the antihero category. Her plant-based powers are used less for murder and more for fighting for the planet’s safety. Plus, her much-loved relationship with Harley Quinn has pushed Ivy into fan-favorite status. That would make her death even more tragic for readers.
