Moe’s Bagel shop takes space on Colorado Blvd. for 2nd Denver location

Moe’s Broadway Bagel is slicing further into the Denver market.

The Boulder-based chain has leased space in the Century 21 Plaza retail center at 1390 S. Colorado Blvd. for its second location in the Mile High City.

It will move into a 2,700-square-foot suite between two other restaurants, Ajinoya Ramen and Zero Degrees, facing Colorado Boulevard.

John and Patty Sherman founded Moe’s Broadway Bagel 32 years ago in Boulder. The family-run business now owns seven shops including one at 550 Grant St. in Denver, which opened in 1995.

The couple’s son Peter Sherman, who is the business’s vice president and store manager, said he hopes the Century 21 Plaza location will open around New Year’s.

“We’ve been looking for another location in Denver for years,” Sherman said. “An employee of our Grant Street location drove by and told us to check the space out, so we did. It’s in a great location, and we’re really excited to expand more in Denver.”

Century 21 Plaza, owned by Antonoff & Co., is at the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Arkansas Avenue. It was previously home to a Century 21 Theater and a White Spot coffee shop, both of which were built in 1967 by Ben Antonoff and closed in the 1990s. For 25 years, only two tenants — Ultimate Electronics, formerly known as SoundTrack, and a Hooters — occupied the building until the Antonoff family decided to redevelop and expand it into a retail center.

Sherman said Moe’s Broadway Bagel is continuing to look to expand into areas from Denver’s southern suburbs all the way up to Fort Collins, which does not have a Moe’s location. No deals have been finalized, he said.

“We’re still family-owned and family-run,” Sherman said. “So we need to be able to be at all the locations. … We make our recipes in Boulder daily, and every night we transport the raw bagel dough to our storefronts to be baked in house, so we can’t go too far.”
