Mary Berry’s easy trick to tell when your cake is perfectly baked and ready

For those of us who aren’t natural bakers, telling when your cake is ready can be a tricky task.

Thankfully, renowned baking expert Mary Berry has an easy trick to tell exactly when your baked delight is ready to be taken out of the oven.

When it comes to sponge cakes, Berry advises bakers to rely on tactile cues.

A properly baked sponge cake should feel springy to the touch and exhibit a slight shrinkage from the sides of the baking tin.

Additionally, the ideal sponge cake should have a pale golden-brown hue, indicating its readiness to be removed from the oven.

Berry said: “Fruit cake – fine skewer inserted into the centre should come out clean and the cake should look the expected colour, light brown for a light fruit cake, darker brown for a traditional rich fruit cake.”

In other baking advice, Berry also recommends making sure you’re reading the instructions before starting.

She said: “Always read the recipe carefully, weigh ingredients using accurate measures and scales and follow the order of the recipe making sure nothing is missed out – ticking off ingredients and instructions as you complete them.”
