“Its historic significance is profound – this is where World War I began, with remnants of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influence giving the city an East-meets-West cultural vibrancy.
“Even decades after its tragic wartime past, Sarajevo’s resilience and welcoming spirit are profound.”
The Siege of Sarajevo lasted for over three years and caused the deaths of over 5,000 civilians. The victims of the war are remembered at the poignant Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide 1992-1995.
Bascarsija is the city’s old bazaar and the ideal spot to sample some traditional Bosnian dishes or pick up a souvenir.
For the best views of the city, head to The Yellow Fortress which is particularly popular at sunset.
