White bread has long been vilified as one of the unhealthiest bread options.
But one surgeon has a surprising hack make it healthier without compromising its taste.
According to a TikTok posted by NHS surgeon Dr Karan Rajan, with just a bit of time, you can make it a lot healthier for you.
Dr Rajan reveals that toasting white bread can lower its Glycemic Index (GI), a measure of how quickly food containing carbohydrates raises blood sugar levels.
By toasting and then freezing, defrosting, and toasting white bread again, individuals could potentially reduce the bread’s GI by almost double.
She wrote: “Whole grains deliver fibre and beneficial vitamins and minerals. Plus, whole grains are less likely to cause blood sugar spikes (thanks to the fibre) and can keep you more satisfied, as fibre takes longer to digest.”
Furthermore, for those concerned about gut health, sourdough bread, particularly sourdough pizza, offers additional benefits.
Sourdough contains “good bacteria” that can support digestion and promote a healthy balance of gut microbiota.
