Crazy Rich Asians musical to feature songs by Singaporean songwriter

Fans of Crazy Rich Asians can soon experience the saga in musical form. On Wednesday (Apr 17), it was announced that a stage adaptation of the Crazy Rich Asians franchise is in the works.

The musical, which aims to open on Broadway, will be directed by Jon M Chu – who previously helmed the 2018 movie starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh.

And, just as we’ve seen in the original novel and movie, you can expect Singapore-born talent to be involved with this musical. Local songwriter-producer Tat Tong, who is based in Los Angeles, will be writing the lyrics for the Crazy Rich Asians musical, alongside Tony-nominated artiste Amanda Green.

Tong’s previous works include Shinee’s Tell Me Your Name, Wang Leehom’s World Without Tears and JJ Lin’s Resurgence and Sanctuary.

In an Instagram post announcing his participation in the musical, Tong thanked Warner Brothers Theater Ventures and its managing director Mark Kaufman for the opportunity and called it “one of those pinch-me moments that a much younger (him) could never have dreamed of”.

No date has been set for the Crazy Rich Asians musical.
