You’ve been cutting cakes wrong – get ‘maximum slices’ with this trick

If you’re having a big party, it can feel as though the celebration cake you’ve ordered isn’t going to go far enough to serve your guests.

But thankfully, a baking expert has the perfect method for cutting a cake into more than 30 portions – you’ve been cutting it wrong all this time!

It may be all too tempting to cut a cake into quarters and help yourself to a juicy, huge piece. Yet this may leave your guests feeling upset.

Baking influencer @cupcakejemma took to Instagram to explain how to avoid that. She captioned her video: “Wanna know the best way to cut a cake for MAXIMUM slices? We’ve got you! Will you be trying this next time you’ve got a cake to cut? Let me know in the comments!”

Jemma said that she finds herself “at kids’ parties at least once a week” since becoming a mum, and she’s “always” getting asked to cut the cakes – so she wanted to share her method.

She began by cutting it into eight slices, before fashioning it into a snowflake shape. She did this by making an incision from the centre of the eighths to half way down the side. This produces two small triangular slices and a diamond-shaped piece. The diamond can then be cut in half, producing two more triangular slices.

Jemma said: “It’s a really simple way to make a small cake go really far..” She got a “whopping” 32 pieces out of her seven-inch cake, and she said this method would also work the same way for a six-inch cake.

She added: “If the pieces are for kids you could even cut them in half again to make the cake go even further.”

“This is genius!! Especially for kids portions as she’s talking about in the video!,” one mum wrote.

Another added: “I really thought at the beginning you were just going to slice this into 8 regular slices and it ended up being the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.”
