A parent’s life changes after the birth of their child. Priorities shift, interests shift and new responsibilities are instilled. It is never easy for a parent to lose their child, at any age. But imagine losing a child when he is but a toddler. Imagine losing the child because of someone else’s mistake and neglect. A parent is then filled with a fiery rage and a thirst for revenge against the perpetrator. There exists no measure for the grief a parent would go through in such cases. Viewers can witness one such heart wrenching story of a mother who lost her toddler son in the K-drama Wonderful World starinng Kim Nam Joo and Cha Eun Woo in lead roles.
Wonderful World Mid-season Review: Kim Nam Joo and Cha Eun Woo lead a flashy mystery thriller where an author’s son is killed in a hit-and-run case
The drama sketches the tumultuous journey of a crestfallen mother Eun Soo Hyun [Kim Nam Joo] after she loses her toddler son in an accident. He was not given timely medical aid and was neglected. Hurt, angered and grief stricken, Soo Hyun takes the matter in her own hands after the court fails to get the justice her son deserves. She is imprisoned for seven years and that advertently affects her married life as well. After their son’s deathm Soo Hyun and her husband Soo Ho [Kim Kang Woo] grew estranged. Soo Ho allegedly began an affair when Soo Hyun was in prison. In this mix, we find Kwon Seon Yul [Cha Eun Woo], who has an agenda of his own. Seon Yul and Soo Hyun’s paths first crossed when she was in prison. After she was released from the prison, she found herself getting acquainted with Kwon again.
Kwon Seon Yul is a mysterious fellow. He is said to hail from a wealthy family but he lives a rough life, doing odd yet dangerous jobs for people. He lost his parents a few years ago and since has been living a hard life. In this week’s episodes, we find that Seon Hyul is the son of the man who killed Soo Hyun’s toddler son.
This drama must be praised for its thrilling narrative of a mother’s pain and tryst for justice. But at the same time, one cannot help but feel bored at the seemingly predictable turns the show takes. We also find some run of the mill cliches present in the storytelling which makes the viewing experience a little less exciting. Coming to the visual aspect of the drama, the makers stick to darker shades to highlight the storm of emotions the characters are going through. Even the daytime scenes are bleak and dry, accentuating the grief-heavy lives the characters are leading.
This week’s episodes have been quite revealing in terms of the connection shared between each pivotal character. What we knew before was more or less confirmed. What is intriguing about this drama is that just when you think that the story might find its resolution soon, there is a new (even though sometimes predictable) twist waiting to reveal itself. That’s the beauty of such revenge-driven plots. The domino effect that started in episode one is slowly gaining pace. With Soo Ho’s career in danger, Soo Hyun growing suspicious of Seon Hyul and Seon Hyul keeping an eye on the couple, it does begin to look like things are becoming murkier by the minute.
Coming to the actor’s performances, Kim Nam Joo as Eun Soo Hyun is a very reliable performer. Soo Hyun’s affliction after the death of her child, to her conviction for justice, it is clearly seen that she is a force to look out for. Kim Nam Joo, whom we last saw in Misty, made a stunning comeback with Wonderful World.
Cha Eun Woo as Kwon Seon Yul is a complete 180-degree turn from the actor’s previous roles. From a lovable and handsome looking lead in a romcom to a handsome yet deadly character in Wonderful World, Cha Eun Woo has indeed come a long way. Seeing him as Seon Yul is a reminder of those characters which embody the saying “Kill them with kindness”.
Im Se Mi and Kim Kang Woo as Han Yu Ri and Kang Soo Ho play their roles effortlessly, too. Im Se Mi is no stranger to such high-tension plots where her character falls in the gray area. Kim Kang Woo is perhaps an apt choice for Soo Ho for he plays his role with such honesty and integrity. Soo Ho is not a straight-laced character. Under all the love for his wife and the show of being the perfect husband, he does harbor selfish intentions to find his version of revenge and success.
The title of the drama Wonderful World is quite antithetic to the events unfolding within the story. Soo Hyun, Soo Ho, Seon Yul’s worlds are anything but wonderful. Their worlds are like those bright looking places which turn out to be deadly marshes as one ventures further. In this week’s episodes, we find out that Seon Yul had orchestrated each encounter with Soo Hyun. She now found out his true identity and now the true cat and mouse chase begins. Most cards are out on the table, a final few hands are to be dealt. Those few hands will be enough to shake the characters’ lives to the very core. This drama sits with the likes of Trolley where a past incident in the characters’ lives comes back to haunt them in the present, leading them to make decision with threatening consequences.
