A CHANNEL 5 crime series documents the brutal attack and murder of mother-of-two Geeta Aulakh.
Here we take a look at what happened to Mrs Aulakh and where those found responsible for her death are now.
Who was Geeta Aulakh?
In 2009, Geeta Aulakh, 28, was brutally attacked as she went to pick up her two sons from a childminder in Greenford, London.
Prior to the attack, the mother-of-two worked as a receptionist at a community radio station and had been in a relationship with her husband, Harpreet Aulakh, also known as Sunny, for 10 years.
What happened to Geeta Aulakh?
In November 2009, Mrs Aulakh had left work to pick up her two sons when she was attacked in the street.
During the incident, Geeta had her hand severed with a machete, in what Detective Inspector John Finch described as a ”viscous, severe attack”.
She was also found with catastrophic head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where she tragically died just a few hours later.
It’s difficult to think of a more vicious and brutal way of killing anybody.
Judge David Paget
Following a murder investigation, a court heard how Geeta’s husband Harpreet had ordered the killing after his wife filed for divorce.
The Channel 5 series also explains how Mr Aulakh was wrongly convinced that his wife was having an affair.
Mr Aulakh recruited two others, Sher Singh of Southall, and Jaswant Dhillon, of Ilford, east London, to ambush Geeta as he remained in a pub under the watch of CCTV cameras.
However, the plan fell apart when one of the men approached police, initially claiming to be an innocent witness.
This then led investigating officers to a canal – where the murder weapon had been discarded.
However, the key breakthrough in the case came when police officers discovered that the weapon was stocked in a shop just a couple of miles from Mr Aulakha’s home in Hounslow, west London.
After obtaining CCTV footage from the shop, police were able to find three people buying such a machete, one of which was Mr Aulakh – linking him to the murder.
Following the trial, Judge David Paget said: ”It’s difficult to think of a more vicious and brutal way of killing anybody.”
What happened to Geeta Aulakha’s killers?
In 2010, Harpreet Aulakh was jailed for life at the Old Bailey and was ordered to serve at least 28 years.
Sher Singh, who wielded the weapon, and Jaswant Dhillon, who acted as a look-out, were also jailed for life and handed minimum sentences of 22 years.
At the sentencing, Mr Justice Saunders said: “It was a pointless, cold-blooded killing of a woman about whom no one except Aulakh had a bad word to say.”
After eight years, both Harpreet Aulakh and Sher Singh – who were Indian nationals – were deported to India under a prisoner transfer scheme, the Daily Mail reports.
