When Does Hogwarts Legacy Take Place?
Essentially, Hogwarts Legacy takes place sometime in the 1800s. Around that time, the Goblins were rather invasive, and since they are such a big part of the game’s main storyline, it’s important that the game takes place around the time that a Goblin Rebellion would be happening. Since the Goblin Rebellion is what essentially fuels the entire story of the game, it’s presumed that the game would take place around 1890.
It’s not very specific about when the game does actually take place, but if you listen in the History of Magic class, you’ll hear bits and pieces of a story that brings up famous Goblin Rebellion individuals like Urg the Unclean. However, rather than dealing with Urg himself, players have to deal with the nasty workings of Ranrok, a Goblin who despises wizards and has found information on the use of Ancient Magic.
Since Hogwarts Legacy takes place about 100 years before Harry Potter is even born, we don’t see too many familiar characters. Professor Matilda Weasley, for example, is an ancestor of Ronald Weasley, and we now know that Headmaster Black is definitely related to Sirius Black. Plus, we even see the Sorting Hat in the game, which is a nod to the books and movies as well.

- 1905-1945 is when Grindelwald locates the Elder Wand and attempts to take over the world
- 1938-1981 is the portion of the timeline in which Voldemort is most active, between his rise and fall
- 1981-present is when Harry Potter enters Hogwarts and leaves
