LOVE STORIYAAN consists of six stories of real-life couples who fought against all odds to be with each other. ‘An Unsuitable Girl’ (Directed by Hardik Mehta) is about Aekta, a divorcee with two daughters, who finds love in Ullekh. ‘Love On Air’ (Directed by Vivek Soni) tells the story of two RJs in Shillong who meet thanks to a blind listener. ‘Homecoming’ (Directed by Shazia Iqbal) depicts the story of a Hindu man and a Muslim woman who have to change countries just to be with each other. ‘Raah Sangharsh Ki’ (Directed by Akshay Indikar), meanwhile, is about an inter-caste couple who struggle immensely but are too happy to have found each other. ‘Faasley’ (Directed by Archana Phadke) is the love story of Kerala-based Dhanya and Kabul-based Homayon and how they go to great lengths to unite, amid the Taliban control of Afghanistan. Lastly, ‘Love Beyond Labels’ (Directed by Collin D’Cunha) tells the story of a trans couple.

Besides the theme, what is common in all stories of LOVE STORIYAAN is that the makers recreate scenes from important life events of couples. The dramatized footage aids a lot in further explaining their tale. The episodes are between 27 and 36 minutes and all the directors take care in keeping the narrative simple. The political statement in these tales is subtle but effective and some of these aspects are sure to become a talking point. ‘An Unsuitable Girl’ is the first and the best story of the lot. The story of Aekta is moving and the way they go all out to win the love of her daughters is heartening. ‘Love On Air’ is decent but what stands out here is the track of the blind friend, Mandira, and how she could sense that the RJs, belonging to rival radio stations, can be an ideal pair. ‘Homecoming’, too, has its share of moments and is awe-inspiring. ‘Raah Sangharsh Ki’ is sweet but also lengthy. ‘Faasley’ is nail-biting while ‘Love Beyond Labels’ is cute.

On the flipside, the first story sets the expectations high in terms of treatment and narrative style. The successive stories, however, don’t reach the same level. ‘Raah Sangharsh Ki’s placement is wrong as it comes after a tale, which is somewhat similar in terms of the struggle. The length of this story and also that of ‘Love On Air’ is a bit too much. Moreover, since it’s a documentary, the audience might not get captivated the way they do for a fictional series. The fiction web shows also usually end on a high, tempting the viewers to check the next episode. That is obviously not possible here and some viewers might give up mid-way, as a result.

Technically, LOVE STORIYAAN is spot-on, from the cinematography to the costumes to the production design. The background score in all stories (Sangeet and Siddharth Haldipur, Anurag Saikia, Sarang Kulkarni) deserves a special mention as it’s quite terrific and enhances the impact. The actors who do well are Srishti Wadhwani (young Aekta), Pratik Rajen Kothari (young Ullekh), Sohan Polock (young Sunit), Usha Moni (young Farida), Spandan Mukherjee (young Rahul), Yashika Batham (young Subhadra), Ankit Arora (young Homayon), Sharnita Ravi (young Dhanya), Moulik Ghosh (child Tista) and Sukanya Bhattacharjee (child Dipan).

On the whole, LOVE STORIYAAN is a nice, genuine effort by Dharmatic Entertainment and Amazon Prime Video and will make you believe in love all over again.
