Ways to verify a schools validity

The Gauteng Department of Education has warned parents to be wary of illegal schools across the province.

In a mission to weed out illegal independent or private schools, just this week, the department along with law enforcement agencies, shut down two illegal schools in Randburg.

Takalani Primary School and Boipuso Primary School were found to be unregistered and non-compliant. The teachers at Boipuso were also found to be not qualified or registered with the South African Council for Educators.

The department says parent who are considering enrolling their child into an independent school, should double check if the school is indeed registered.

There are three ways to check:

  1. EMIS NUMBER- For Gauteng based schools, the nine digit long number always starts with 700. Each EMIS number is unique to each school.
  2. SCHOOL ADDRESS- Parents should demand to see registration letter of the school along with the Gauteng Department of Education EMIS Number
  3. HOTLINE- If you are not sure, parents should phone the hotline numbers and email address.
