Vauxhall puts a barista counter in the boot of its Mokka EV after finding drivers plan charges around coffee breaks

Vauxhall’s frothed up the latest trick to keep EV owners happy while they charge: a bespoke barista-standard coffee making station for its Mokka EV.

The ‘Mokka Coffe-e’ is a one-off that’ll ‘provide electric vehicle drivers with the perfect coffee break while they charge’.

The concept car ensures drivers have access to their caffeine fix no matter where they charge Vauxhall says.

Vauxhall research revealed three quarter of EV drivers intentionally plan journeys to include charge points that offer coffee, and answered the caffeine calls with a new Mokka Coffe-e concept

After Vauxhall research revealed three quarters of EV drivers intentionally plan journeys to include charge points that offer coffee, the manufacturer leapt into caffeinated action and designed a version of its new Mokka Electric car with an on-board coffee machine set up.

The Mokka Electric is just one of many electric Vauxhalls, with the new Grandland EV specs just confirmed and a new Frontera arriving on UK roads later this year.

It comes with a grinder, mini fridge and knock box all sitting within a bespoke cabinet concealed by two Alcantara covered doors with sleek stainless-steel handles and a hand stitched design that mirrors the Mokka interior

The Coffe-e concept features not one but two coffee machines – ground and pod – as well as a milk steamer, coffee grinder, knock box and fridge so you can get working on the perfect cappuccino while you charge.

And there’s no excuse for making someone making a bad cafe when your coffee cart has scales to measure a precise quality of beans, a Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) tool to ensure a smooth extraction flow of coffee – you should get a barista certificate just for knowing what that is – and an espresso tamper to evenly pack the grounds.

Because this is Anglettera, Vauxhall’s made provisions for the high likelihood a remote charging coffee break will end up being a damp squib, with the table stowing away to produce two umbrellas from a concealed compartment.

But being a chic coffee break, the umbrellas are hand-crafted British-made Fox umbrellas. We might not be able to grow our own coffee beans, but we can make our own umbrellas.

Vauxhall – the British brand which is headquartered in Bedfordshire but owned by Stellantis – has used British artisanal coffee roasters Cafeology to curate a special range of beans inspired for the Mokka Coffe-e.

Inspired by the colour palette of the Mokka Electric, there are six blends all roasted and packaged in Sheffield and made from sustainable and ethically sourced beans.

The ‘Iconic Green’ is apparently ‘a creamy and rich flavour with chocolate tones’, ‘Voltaic Blue’ is ‘sweet and vibrant with notes of blueberry and passionfruit’ while ‘Contrast Grey’ is a ‘balanced caramel flavoured expresso with a herbal, earthy body’.

If these sound a big too ambitious for your taste buds, there’s also a less adventurous ‘Artic White’ medium roast with ‘plenty of molasses sweetness’, a ‘Cosmic Red’ with hints ‘of stone fruit acidity and hazelnut’ and for the strong drinkers, ‘Carbon Black’ is ‘best enjiyed black with notes of nectarine and blueberry’.

However, for the quicker stops you can just use the efficiency of pod coffee instead.

While the setup is pretty impressive, it still has nothing on the £44,000 champagne chest – equipped with a caviar dispenser – that you can buy for the boot of your new Rolls-Royce.

James Taylor, managing director at Vauxhall, said: ‘The UK is a nation of coffee drinkers, with 95 million cups drunk in a day, and Vauxhall owners are no exception to this, with 64 per cent drinking at least one cup a day.

‘Whether that’s a latte, flat white, cappuccino, or espresso, the Mokka concept has all the tools necessary to craft that perfect coffee – wherever the Mokka’s new 54kWh battery might take you.’

Let’s hope all you need on your getaway is a good, strong coffee because there won’t be any room left in the 310-litre boot for any other provisions.
