Forecasters expect slow journey times with possible disruption to public transport services.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Fog and freezing fog patches, dense in places, likely to cause some travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.”

Visibility will affect drivers during rush hour, but the fog is expected to lift by the afternoon.

“Early fog and freezing fog patches will lift through the course of this morning,” added the forecaster.

“However, during the rush hour, fog will still be dense in places reducing visibility to below 100 metres at times.”

Once the fog clears many western areas will experience sunny spells on Wednesday.

But cloudier skies are expected for eastern counties with showery rain at times.

With an onshore breeze, it’s also going to feel cool along the east coast with temperatures of 7 to 9°C.

Meanwhile inland temperatures could reach the dizzying heights of 11 to 13°C.

It comes after the mercury plummeted to a freezing -6.5°C on Monday in Scotland’s Altnaharra.

Yesterday 35 flood warnings were in place for the UK and 134 flood alerts.

Snow blanketed Cumbria and Wiltshire at the weekend – with many waking to a total whiteout.

Photos showed snow-covered paddocks, while cars navigated icy roads in Nenthead.

Snow coated the ground as far south as Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, where camels appeared out of place.

A yellow weather alert had been in place for a four-hour period on Saturday, covering parts of Gloucester, Worcester and parts of Wiltshire.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: “We had a little more snow than expected.

“It’s not unusual for this time of the year, we often do get some snow in March – it’s the old adage that it is more likely to snow in Easter than it is in Christmas, and there is a bit of truth to that.”
