True Detective Receives the Best Possible Update

HBO is ready for more dark mysteries with unhinged detectives. The company has renewed True Detective for season 5, with season 4/Night Country showrunner Issa López returning to helm the next season of the anthology series. The news comes days after Sunday’s (February 18) finale of the latest season.

While divisive for some fans of the first season, which many hold to be sacred, the revival of the series has brought in the highest viewership across all four seasons. That success has brought the showrunner a new deal with HBO, in which she will work on the anthology alongside other new projects.

True Detective Renewed for Season 5 With Issa López Steering the Ship Again

Historically, each season has stood on its own two feet. Night Country built a small bridge connecting to season 1 while still being its own thing. It is uncertain of the direction the show will take in terms of its location, cast, supernatural flair, and previous season connections.

The showrunner posted on X to celebrate the news of True Detective moving forward with season 5. She wrote, “HERE WE GO! So proud of our Night Country. So excited for the new adventure. So Thankful.”

Night Country was a major shakeup for a series that struggled to reach the height of its first season. It brought supernatural pieces to the murder mystery along with bringing the first women leads for the show’s streak of having men investigating grisly crimes. It rubbed the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, the wrong way as he called the connections to the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson season “stupid” and shared negative reviews of Night Country. The latter move caught attention as fans of the latest season slammed him, calling the creator “an enormous baby” and “pathetic.”

True Detective: Night Country is currently available in its entirety with the other three seasons on Max.
