To avoid paying £300 Ryanair fees, holidaymakers stuff specially made coat with 30kg of luggage, including clothes, kettle and a portable SOFA

A pair of holidaymakers made a giant coat with super-sized pockets so that they could ‘wear’ their entire 30 kilos of luggage on a flight.

Joshua Pieters and his friend Archie Manners set themselves the goal of wearing everything they needed for their trip to avoid paying up to £300 in additional fees.

They tested their creation on a Ryanair flight from London Luton airport to Portugal in June.

Joshua, 30, had a coat tailored to add ‘heavy duty’ pockets so he could stuff them full of everything that would usually go in his suitcase – including a travel kettle and even a portable sofa.

Meanwhile, Archie Manners, 31, donned a wearable tent so that they had their ‘accommodation’ with them when they landed.

Youtuber Joshua’s coat managed to carry an array of holiday essentials including teabags, shorts and underwear, a beach ball, a chewable toothbrush, a spork, shampoo and conditioner.

Despite a few ‘funny looks’, footage shows how the content creators miraculously made it through security before boarding the plane and happily landing in Portugal.

Although he did note that the coat was too bulky to wear in the plane seat and so he have to store it in the overhead locker.

Joshua claims they saved £59.99 on luggage costs each way as well as a surcharge of £120 there and back for exceeding the usual baggage weight limit.

The pair posted a full-length video to their shared YouTube account (Josh & Archie) and it received 17,000 views in 24 hours. Joshua also shared the video to his X account (@joshua_pieters) where it has been watched over 23,000 times.

In the video, they dubbed the creation the ‘Josh Coat’ – revealing it was designed in Mayfair by Archie’s tailor.

The pair were also able to successfully transform Archie’s Nike ISPA ‘Metamorph Poncho’ into its tent form on the beach. They were, however, disappointed to discover it was a ‘day tent’ – which means it didn’t actually have a door.

Joshua, from London, said: ‘It’s just a question everyone’s always had like “could I just wear my luggage?” or “could I just stuff my pockets with my luggage instead of paying for a suitcase?”

‘We always see flights advertised as really cheap but we always end up spending way more money.

‘We wanted to explore the question of whether you could actually take a budget flight for the price the flight was advertised as.

‘We got loads of funny looks at the airport. We were a little bit nervous. When we were going through security, we thought “this might not work”.

‘It was one of those things where we knew it should work because we weren’t technically breaking any of the rules but it definitely felt like we were doing something wrong.

‘The coat was made of a denim-like material, it was very heavy duty as the pockets had to be really strong [to hold everything].

‘A lot of people were actually asking where they could buy the coat from because they wanted to try it themselves too.

‘[When we landed and got off the plane] we were relieved we were on holiday. It was summertime and we were able to enjoy the beauty of Portugal.’
