In one of their most recent books, Best Beaches, the travel experts at Lonely Planet have named 100 of the world’s best beaches.

Bays and Beaches in Australia, Thailand, America, Greece, and Italy have all been included in the publisher’s exclusive round-up.

And one place that made the list was Famara Beach in Lanzarote.

According to the experts, Famara is one of the greatest surf beaches in Europe.

They wrote: “Strong Atlantic swells pull in wave-riders from all over the continent and beyond, and even just whispering the name ‘Famara’ guarantees a blissful in-the-know smile among the many fans of this all-natural Canarian haven.”

Just like plenty of other beaches on the island, the beach has been shaped by the island’s long volcanic history.

Located on the northwest side of the island, Famara Beach stretches for three miles.

The beach is set within the fishing village of La Caleta de Famara and the base of Famara’s impressive cliffs.

Popular activities on the beach include surfing, body boarding, windsurfing, kite surfing and beach yoga.

When the tide is low, the beach is covered in enormous pools of shallow water, which are often described as the perfect place to relax.

Swimming isn’t recommended at the beach because of rip tides and strong currents.

Away from the beach, the tiny fishing village is home to surf schools, cafes, seafood restaurants and white-washed houses.

Famara Beach has been praised by visitors on TripAdvisor, with a 4.5/5 star rating from more than 1,600 reviews.

One person wrote: “It’s mainly a beach for surfers, so there are very few facilities.

“Still, it’s great fun in the waves and there is plenty of room for everyone.”

Another added: “Famara beach is beautiful with its powerful waves rolling in from the Atlantic.

“It’s not recommended for swimming, but jumping in the waves and surfing is possible.”

Someone else wrote: “This isn’t a family beach, but is a stunning example of a wild surf beach. Facilities mainly in the town but the beach itself is stunning.”

Playa de Famara lies on the northern side of the island, and it’s just a 25-minute drive from Lanzarote Airport.

There are plenty of other beaches in Spain that have been praised by both travel experts and holidaymakers.

One secluded bay in Spain also featured on the list of the world’s best beaches.

Torimibia Bay in Llanes, Asturias was praised for having warm seas – even though they’re slightly cooler than waters on stretches of shoreline elsewhere in the country.

The bay’s waters frequently exceed 20C – which is definitely warm enough for a dip.
