The pretty UK Island with the ‘best’ fish and chips worth the 1-hour journey from mainland | UK | News

Visitors to the remote Shetland Islands have discovered the “perfect” fish and chip shop that is worth the journey from mainland Scotland and praised the “perfectly crisp and crunchy” taste of the delicacy.

Frankie’s fish and chip shop in Brae claims to be the UK’s “most northerly” fish and chip shop sourcing premium and sustainable Shetland seafood.

The cafe was originally set up in 2008 and sits about 25 miles north of Lerwick, with incredible views.

As well as taking a short flight or ferry ride to reach the Shetland Islands, customers have travelled worldwide to visit the cafe. On review platform, TripAdvisor, visitor Graham was “delighted” with the taste. Graham M wrote: “As an Australian where we have quite good fish and chips, the food here was the best ever by a country mile.”

He added: “Would recommend a visit here as a must do while in Shetland…”

Frankie’s claim 98 percent of the fish and shellfish sold come from MSC-accredited stocks, which means the fisheries perform better against key sustainability criteria.

In the ‘National Fish and Chips Awards’ 2015, the eatery bagged the top spot as the ‘best independent takeaway’ in the UK.

TripAdvisor user Alipaulstaffs wrote: “We had takeaway haddock and chips and it was delicious, cooked to perfection a lovely light crispy batter and all cooked to order.”

Tom Horsham added: “Very tasty fish and chips and served with friendly efficiency.” Other users have praised the cafe being “reasonably priced” with “good-sized portions”.

Brae started life as a tiny Scottish fishing village. It is situated on the end of Busta Voe on a narrow neck of land which separates the mainland from Northmavine.

According to Scotland.com, in Gaelic, the word “brae” is typically converted to mean “hill”, however, it is much better analysed as “an incline to the sea”.

From Aberdeen in Scotland to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, a ferry crossing takes 12 hours and 30 minutes.

For a speedier journey, flights from London Heathrow take 3 hours and 25 minutes, with two flights per week. A flight from Edinburgh is shorter, with a flight time of one hour and 30 minutes.

Welcoming visitors from near and far, the Shetland Islands are the most remote part of the UK lying roughly 100 miles off the north coast of Scotland. The islands separate the Atlantic Ocean, on the west, from the North Sea on the east.

Scotland.org states seafood has been the cornerstone of Shetland’s economy for centuries and it’s still the largest sector by far, with 60,000 tonnes of herring and mackerel landed annually. Fish farming also continues to go from strength to strength, with around 25,000 tonnes of salmon, mussels and other shellfish produced each year.
