The Penguin Ending At DC After Issue #12

DC’s July solicitations reveal that The Penguin is ending with its upcoming 12th issue. The popular series launched last summer from writer Tom King and artist Rafael de Latorre. It spun out of the character’s death in Batman #125-127. Throughout the series, Cobblepot was forced back into Gotham’s seedy underbelly of crime as a pawn for the United States government. The series helped expand on the lore and mythos of classic Batman villain Oswald Cobblepot AKA The Penguin.

Tom King and Rafael de Latorre used The Penguin to explore the character’s psyche. As the series has gone on, readers have been treated to new dimensions and elements of one of Gotham’s more iconic villains. This includes a look into the life of the criminal and the people that made him who he is today, like his ex-wife. Now, he finds himself in a whole new landscape for Gotham’s criminal underground. Since Oswald was last in Gotham, his twin children have taken charge of the Iceberg Lounge. This forces the man to make alliances and deals he never would have dreamed of.

In the final issue of The Penguin, Cobblepot’s plans for Gotham have gone awry. Subsequently, the villain finds himself trapped within the Batmobile alongside, you guessed it, Batman. The two nemeses are slowly sinking into a watery grave, and this forces The Penguin to contemplate if it was all worth it. However, he isn’t going down without a fight. The villain has one more trick up his sleeve that will bring this epic saga to a finish.

The Future Of Cobblepot

Of course, this is not the end of Oswald Cobblepot’s year of reign. Later this year the MAX show also titled The Penguin is set to hit the streamer. It is a live-action series that follows the events of the feature-film The Batman. The cast includes Colin Farrell as the titular villain with Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.

The Penguin officially bows out with issue #12 on sale 07/24.
