The Gauteng province is known for producing excellent results in matric, and it is no surprise that three of its best-performing districts were among the top ten in the country.
The matric class of 2023 who sat for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations achieved an overall pass rate of 82.9% and the Gauteng province was ranked third in the country with 85%.
BEST-PERFORMING DISTRICTS IN GAUTENG
On Friday, 19 January, the Gauteng Department of Education announced the provincial matric results and awarded the top performing learners and schools in the 2023 National Senior Certificate examinations.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane congratulated the class of 2023 for their excellent performance.
Chiloane said the group achieved 41 459 distinctions, contributing nearly 20% to the national total. In addition, 297 schools achieved over 95%, with 143 achieving a perfect 100% pass rate!
“We have delivered on our mandate with the class of 2023. We need to recognise our collective success that it has to do with the commitment from the Gauteng education department system, learners, parents and teachers,” he said.
The top three best-performing districts in the province are the same as 2022. They are:
- Johannesburg West (1st place nationally)
- Tshwane South (3rd place nationally)
- Gauteng North (9th place nationally)
