Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico shot in head and chest, reports say – POLITICO

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot on Wednesday after a government meeting, local media reported, suffering injuries to his head and chest before he was taken from the scene by his security detail.

A woman at the scene in the town of Handlová, central Slovakia was cited by news outlet MNT.SK as saying that she had heard three or four shots. She saw Fico fall to the ground with head and chest injuries. A witness told Reuters he heard several shots and a man was detained by police.

The populist prime minister won a general election last October and has faced widespread criticism for polarising politics in the central European nation with pro-Russian comments and a push to extend state control over the media.
