Some of the most scenic train journeys in the world are in Britain, costing as little as £5.

However, if you fancy exploring more of the countryside and coast by rail, then there is a clever pass that lets you do this without spending too much money.

Called the Ranger and Rover pass, it works in a similar way to the interrail pass in Europe, allowing discounted travel ranging from four days to three months.

Instead, the UK pass lets you buy discounted passes for particular regions across the country.

Some of the popular options include the Freedom of Devon & Cornwall Rover, with unlimited travel on eight days across a 15 day period across the two counties.

Railcard holders will pay just £64.30, while full price kids are £48.75 and adults are £97.50.

A Freedom of the Northwest, with unlimited seven-day travel, costs £82.60 with a railcard of £110 without, with destinations including Morecambe, Blackpool and Carlisle.

A three-day Kent rover pass is just £45, with unlimited travel meaning you could hit up popular spots including Margate, Whitstable and Folkestone on a budget.

Otherwise there are also one-day travel cards including the Robin Hood ticket, travelling around Nottingham area for £6.20 or one-day Cotswolds rover tickets for as little as £13.

The website states: “Rangers and Rovers are normally offered for a specific geographical area.

They’re perfect for exploring, with the freedom to make as many stops as you want.

“They may also include local bus travel, and there are often other offers and discounts available.”

They added there are also often First Class options too, if it is running late, can still claim compensations and refunds on them like regular tickets.

There are some restrictions – most of the passes can’t be used during peak hours, which are often before 9.30am from Monday to Friday.

However, they can be used on off-peak trains, as well as on bank holidays and weekends.

Another scenic train journey in the UK costs just £3 and has amazing sea views.

Otherwise if you fancy going abroad, here are four European train trips you can join from the UK.
