Scotland boss Steve Clarke set to join other Euro 2024 coaches in lobbying for major rule change ahead of tournament

Steve Clarke will join the 23 other national team bosses in Dusseldorf on April 8 and 9 for pre-tournament workshop.

And one of the topics up for discussion is the number of players allowed to be selected for the finals.

As things stand, countries are able to name 23-players for their squad.

But there is a growing feeling amongst the managers that the number should be increased.

Euro bigwigs agreed to this request at the last delayed Euros to allow for Covid.

And now coaches are eager to explore the possibility of another ruling which would grant them permission to name three extra players.

England boss Gareth Southgate backs the idea.

He lost key men Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Sam Johnstone to injury for Tuesday night’s friendly clash with Belgium.

And Southgate now fears he’ll be forced to name players in his summer squad who aren’t fully fit.

He said: “There is one more Uefa meeting where there’s been a little bit of talk amongst some of the coaches about possibly increasing that.

“We’ve got to make the best decisions with what we know and some of those currently are going to be medical decisions.

“And we’ve been able to get those right in the previous tournaments.

“We’ve been able to give people time, but with 23 that’s definitely more difficult.”

For Scotland, skipper Andy Robertson is sweating over results of a scan on the ankle knock he picked up against Northern Ireland.

Whilst Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor and Rangers star Ryan Jack have also dealt with recent injuries.

Defensive duo Grant Hanley and Scott McKenna were late withdrawals from the March camp squad.
