Scary incident compounds Tigers nightmare as Toby Nankervis cleans up Rhyan Mansell and Hugo Ralphsmith

Richmond have suffered a 119-point defeat just a week after a 91-point loss, with a scary incident compounding their latest Gabba nightmare.

The Tigers trailed Brisbane by 102 points at three-quarter time on Saturday night in a game where rising star Mykelti Lefau was substituted out with a jaw injury from an accidental knee to the head.

Things went from bad to worse on the injury front when three teammates went for a spoil on the 50m arc — only to clean up each other and let the ball slip through as the Lions went from coast to coast for a goal.

Richmond captain Toby Nankervis went in hard and sent Rhyan Mansell and Hugo Ralphsmith crashing to the turf.

Ralphsmith managed to escape with body contact but Mansell copped a Nankervis elbow to the face and then landed on his head.

He was clearly shaken by the incident, struggling to stand up or walk straight as a Tigers doctor and physio attempted to help him to the bench.

“Mansell worse for wear behind play, that was a heavy collision,” Bulldogs great Luke Darcy said in commentary for Channel 7.

Swans premiership hero Jude Bolton said: “You hate seeing that.”

Richmond coach Adem Yze confirmed Mansell has “a big fat lip” and will enter concussion protocols with some symptoms, meaning he will miss next week’s Dreamtime clash with Essendon.

Yze could only shake his head at the bad luck from friendly fire.

“That’s the game, it’s a brutal game and that’s what we’re going through right now,” he said.

“In the end I’m rapt both of them were going for the footy and they’re trying to help our team.

“Rhyan’s a terrific teammate, our players love playing with him. He’s going to be sorely missed. He’s a team-first player that does that every week. It’s unfortunate he’ll miss Dreamtime next week.”

Earlier, Lefau’s night was ended by an unfortunate blow from Lions defender Jack Payne.

Lefau attempted to fly high for a mark over Harris Andrews but was quickly crashing back down to the ground.

While falling he was struck on the jaw by the knee of Payne, who had come in from the back for a spoil.

“We’re hoping it’s not fractured,” Yze said.

“We’ll have scans on that when we get back (to Melbourne).”

The Tigers lost a two-point finals thriller to Brisbane at the Gabba less than two years ago but have now been beaten by a combined total of 200 points in two of the same match-ups since.

Richmond have won just one game this season, a stunning upset over Sydney in Round 3 that feels like a lifetime ago.

They could regain Jack Graham in the next two weeks but Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Jack Ross and Tom Lynch are still further away from a return from injury.
