SC advises against selective highlighting of mob lynching instances via PIL

New Delhi: SC has verbally observed that the menace of mob lynching cuts across religious and caste lines. It said there should not be selective outrage while raising such instances. Justices BR Gavai, Aravind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a PIL that sought directions to curb instances of mob lynching. SC asked petitioners to not be selective in highlighting such cases. It particularly enquired about murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, who was killed in 2022 for allegedly sharing a social media post of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma regarding Prophet Muhammad. The PIL has raised incidents of mob violence against minorities and sought immediate interim compensation for the families of victims of mob lynching.
