Sanjay Leela Bhansali shares the last wish of his father was to hear Reshma’s ‘Hayo Rabba’: ‘I had no place to play it…’ | Hindi Movie News

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who made his web series debut with the extravagant OTT show ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, recently reflected on his modest upbringing and how his love of art and cinema started with his father. He also mentioned that he was unable to provide his father‘s final request to hear the song ‘Hayo Rabba’.
Navin Bhansali, the father of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, never found success as a producer. His last film, ‘Jahazi Lootera’, failed at the box office. Aakkoo’s fantasy action movie, which starred Anwar Hussain, P Jairaj, Shashikala, and Maruti Rao, was a non-starter.
During an interview with the New York Times, Bhansali recalled that his father had made an odd request on his deathbed as he wanted to listen to Reshma’s song ‘Hayo Rabba’. The director said that Reshma was well-known for her ‘raw, untrained’ voice and she stayed in Pakistan during India’s Partition, where the Bhansali family also had their origins.
His father was unconscious and soon descended into a coma when SLB returned carrying the cassette containing the song. Bhansali expressed his deep emotion on his father’s last wish and further added, “My mother insisted on me playing ‘Hayo Rabba,’ even though I had nowhere to play it!” He explained that his father chose this particular song because he wanted to stay connected to his heritage. He remarked, “Life is so fascinating. Will this ever be captured in a film?”
Getting emotional, Bhansali remembered a time from his childhood when he was just six years old and his father had taken him to a movie set. He shared how facilitating it was and came to the realization that he didn’t want to be anywhere—not in school, not on the cricket field, or anywhere else. He shared, “I don’t want to be on the cricket ground, I don’t want to be in school, I don’t want to be anywhere. I want to be here. This is my place.”
On the work front, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s OTT series ‘HeeraMandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, an eight-episode television series, premiered on May 1 in 190 countries. His film ‘Love & War’, starring Vicky Kaushal, Ranbir Kapoor, and Alia Bhatt, is slated to release this year.
