Sandakan cops on the hunt for man caught snatching handbag from car in viral video

KOTA KINABALU: Police in Sabah’s east coast Sandakan district are on the hunt for a man who was seen in a viral video opening a car door to snatch a handbag of a elderly woman who just parked the car.

The man, whose car was parked alongside the woman’s car, was seen driving away while the woman helplessly tried to stop him in the video shared widely in the social media.

Sandakan acting OCPD Supt Ramasamy Kuppan said that on Saturday (April 13) that the 67-year-old woman, a vegetable hawker, had lodged a police report about the incident that occurred at the parking lot of Mile 8 market at about 8am on Friday (April 12).

The woman told police that she had placed her handbag on the front passenger seat of the car when an unknown man opened the door and grabbed the handbag.

The suspect, whose car is seen parked beside her vehicle, drove off immediately.

The woman was seen shouting for help as she tried in vain to stop the suspect from escaping.

Supt Ramsamy have classified the case as theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code and were now working towards identifying the suspect.

He urged any member of the public with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp Morshidi Sian at 013-833 2996.
