Flight FR6267 departed from Barcelona at 11.30am and was due to land in the capital at 1:30pm.

But it was forced to divert to Manchester Airport after issuing an emergency alert around 1:15pm.

It landed in the English city at 1.20pm and Edinburgh Airport confirmed the plane’s arrival was cancelled.

The airline has now confirmed a medical emergency was the cause of the diversion.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “This flight from Barcelona to Edinburgh diverted to Manchester airport after a customer became ill on board.

“The crew called ahead to request medical assistance upon arrival, the aircraft landed, and the customer disembarked and was met by medics for further treatment.

“The flight continued to Edinburgh.

“Ryanair apologies to all customers for this short delay.

It comes days after a Ryanair flight from Scotland was forced to turn back and make an emergency landing moments after take-off.

Flight RK1274 from Edinburgh to London Stanstead left the capital on Monday but was forced to make a U-turn after the crew declared a mid-air emergency.

We also told how “out of control” passengers were hauled off a Ryanair flight after they began fighting and “throwing bottles” on the plane.
