Rudy Giuliani Accused of Using Bankruptcy Filing to Stiff the Election Workers He Owes $148 Million

When Rudy Giuliani was ordered last month to pay Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, the 2020 election workers he defamed, nearly $150 million, the resounding response heard ’round the world went something like, “There’s no way he’s got even close to that kind of money.” But clearly, he’s got some money, which is why Freeman and Moss are calling bullshit on his decision to file for bankruptcy protection, which they believe is an attempt to get out of paying them a dime.

Per CNN, the mother-daughter duo alleged in a court filing Thursday that they attempted to collect some of the money they were awarded, days after a jury ordered the former mayor to pay the women $148 million. But they could not do so because Giuliani had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. (Filing for bankruptcy allowed Giuliani temporary but immediate relief from paying debts owed. He has also said he intends to appeal the verdict but would, conveniently, have to get permission from the bankruptcy judge.) “If Mr. Giuliani truly wanted to appeal the Freeman Litigation, all he needed to do was not file for Chapter 11 protection,” lawyers for Freeman and Moss wrote in the filing. They added that Giuliani has “a history of engaging the judicial system in bad faith,” and that his tactics are an obvious attempt to “hold off creditors” and “gut their legal rights.”

Freeman and Moss’s lawyers argued in the filing Thursday that, incredibly, Giuliani has continued to defame the two women, even after being found liable and ordered to pay them a massive amount of money. (Vanity Fair has reached out to a Giuliani spokesman for comment.)

While testifying last month, Moss told jurors that after the former mayor spread vicious, baseless claims about her and her mother, “I was afraid for my life. I literally felt like someone was going to come and attempt to hang me, and there’s nothing that anyone will be able to do about it.” She added: “I now am very anxious. I have these nonstop anxious sweats. I have a lot of dark moments. I no longer go out. I will not be caught out anywhere alone, ever…. I look totally different; I gained, like, 70 pounds. I stress eat. I cry a lot. I’m just this whole new stressed-out person.” Freeman read a selection of the terrifying messages she received as a result of Giuliani’s decision to put a target on her back, which included, “Kill yourself now so we can save AMMO,“ and “I hope the Federal government hangs you and your daughter from the Capitol dome you treasonous piece of shit! I pray that I will be sitting close enough to hear your necks snap.” She told the jury, “My life is just messed up. It’s really messed up all because somebody put me on blast.”

A number of Republicans really want a government shutdown (they have so far been unsuccessful in achieving one)
