Remote town dubbed the UK’s ‘best kept secret’ – with award-winning distillery & one of Airbnb’s most famous homes

ONE of the UK’s most remote places is also described as one of its “best kept secrets”.

The problem with holiday hotspots is that they can become overrun with tourists, especially during busy travel seasons.

However, Drimnin in the Morvern peninsula in Scotland is said to be one of the most remote places in the UK, making it ideal for those wanting to enjoy a tranquil break.

It’s a great place to go during both the summer and the winter, with plenty of places to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, or even see the Northern Lights if you happen to be there on the right night.

Western Highland Peninsulas explained the diversity of creatures on offer in Morvern, for nature lovers looking to see spot some animals.

They wrote: “Described by many as ‘the best kept secret in Scotland’, Morvern is a must for nature lovers seeking solitude and rare species of wildlife.

“In winter there is a wide range of wildlife from sea eagles and golden eagles to pine martins and peregrines. It’s also home to one of the UK’s most elusive creatures – the otter.”

Whale and dolphin watching tours also set off from not too far away, while basking sharks sightings aren’t uncommon either.

The shore isn’t just for animals however, with plenty of beaches around the peninsula for visitors to head to on sunny days, including one man made beach with white sands.

People also like to head to Loch Arienas for a swim as well, with plenty of places around the edge of the water suitable for relaxing.

Morvern.org said: “There are many beaches and coves along the coastline, mainly shingle.

“A man made white sand beach, made with reject sand from the mine, lies in front of Lochaline Hotel.

“The freshwater Loch Arienas also offers many easily accessible sandy coves.”

While surrounded by such nature it may be tempting to stay outside as much as possible, but there is one attraction that’s worth heading indoors for.

The Nc’Nean Distillery is among the best in Scotland, according to the Guardian, who ranked it in the top 10.

It was also loved by Coast Magazine, who wrote: “If the splendid isolation gets too much, there are a few things to do nearby.

“The Nc’Nean Distillery has regular tours and the shop opens every weekday.”

Despite its remoteness, Drimnin has plenty of spectacular choices when it comes to accommodation.

Included in that is the Drimnin Estate, which boasts 7000 acres at the tip of the peninsula.

Its website brags about having “rugged coastline, ancient woodland, heather moorland and rich pastures” and also being “undisturbed by traffic and a haven for wildlife, including pine martens, otters and the elusive wildcat”.

It offers a variety of holiday accommodation, including cottage holidays, bed & breakfast and the 19th century Drimnin House for larger gatherings.

Three nights in a self-catered lodge for two can be booked from £450 while the house itself can be booked from a weekly rate of £6700.

Included in that are the services of both a cook and housekeeper.

Elsewhere, guests can book a night in one of the most unique Airbnbs around, as long as they’re happy to wait.

The “Unique and Secluded AirShip with Breathtaking Highland Views” was built by Architect Roderick James and his interior designer wife Amanda Markham in 2018.

The “remote, cosy, compact, aluminium clad capsule structure” has been compared to a “futuristic air ship” and offers breath-taking Highland views from floor to ceiling.

The £170 a night accommodation was the most wish-listed Airbnb rental on the booking site in the UK in 2020 and is almost fully booked between now and October.

Anyone wanting to stay this summer needs to book quickly, with just a handful of dates available in June and July.

The property has an overall score of 4.94/5 from hundreds of reviews, with guests amazed by what the accommodation has to offer.

One reviewer wrote: “Absolutely outstanding place to stay, what an experience.”

Another added: “The Airship is a once in a lifetime experience.”
