Chennai: Filmmaker and writer Lokesh Kanagaraj has once again proved why he is one of the best directors in the Tamil cinema industry. Recently, the title announcement of Thalaivar 171 was revealed on YouTube. While many have seen Rajinikanth playing a similar coolie role in Uzhaipaali (1993), Mannan (1992), Mallum Malarum (1989) and once again Rajinikanth portrays his classic look of a coolie in the title teaser.

On April 22, Thalaivar 171’s title was announced, on the official YouTube channel of Sun Pictures. A three-minute 16-second title teaser was uploaded where a stellar performance by Super Star Rajinikanth is witnessed. In the title announcement video, Rajinikanth’s voice can be heard singing a catchy tune from his 1979 film alongside Kamal Haasan, Ninaithale Inikkum. The song reflects a carefree and pleasure-seeking attitude, mirroring the personality Rajinikanth portrayed in the movie.
In the teaser, a glimpse is shown of the protagonist using a belt fashioned from gold watches to pummel his enemies. Presented in a stark black-and-white visual style, only the gleam of the gold watches cuts through the monochrome, highlighting their unusual material. It is worth noting that Coolie is the first collaboration film of Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth.
Lokesh Kanagaraj had earlier confirmed that Thalai 171 now titled ‘Coolie’ will not be a part of Lokesh’s Cinematic Universe (LCU). Hence, Rajinikanth’s upcoming film will be a standalone film. Although, many might speculate that the character ‘Rolex’ might be included in the film, because of the wristwatch action sequence in the title announcement.
While the title announcement featured names like stunt director Anbariv and Anirudh Ravichandran for composing the background score for ‘Coolie’. It is a very well-known fact that in most of Kanagaraj’s films, Anirudh is the artist who impresses the audience the most.
A news report by India Today claimed that Sivakarthikeyan is speculated to be attached to Kanagaraj’s project in a leading role. An official announcement revealing the cast and crew is expected soon. Details regarding the cast and crew for the upcoming Rajinikanth film “Coolie” are still under wraps, with only the title being revealed so far. This project reunites Rajinikanth with Sun Pictures, following their successful collaboration on “Jailer.” The movie is slated for release in 2025.
