IF YOU’RE ever in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, you’re likely to encounter a number of statues – some large and imposing, others more subtle, blending in with their surroundings.
But it’s said that one of the Scandinavian city’s many statues is kept at a toasty 37º Celsius all year round, no matter the season. Is this true?

If you head over to Dramaten, the Royal Dramatic Theatre, you’ll come across the brass statue of Margaretha Krook (1925-2001), a famous Swedish stage and film actress.
During her lifetime, she was often approached with proposals to have a statue built in her honour, but rejected them all, as she found statues “cold and uninviting.”

After her death, the theatre came up with a clever idea that would allow them to have a statue made of Krook while respecting her wishes – a heated statue.
Inside the statue, there’s a coil that keeps the statue at a steady 37º Celsius, so in the cold winters, you’ll often see visitors placing their hands on the statue’s belly in order to absorb the statue’s warmth – that’s why you’ll notice that it’s shinier than the rest of the statue.
So if you find yourself in need of something to warm you up while in Stockholm, be sure to drop by Krook’s statue!
