‘Proper’ place to store carrots to keep them fresh – never store them in the fridge drawer

Carrots are an essential part of any food shopping list, and there is nothing worse than buying fresh vegetables only to discover they have gone mouldy or slimy.

However, it appears that carrots may be spoiling faster as we have been storing them the wrong way, as apparently, they will not last long in a fridge drawer.

Amanda Rocchio, a nutritionist coach and cook, has posted to social media to explain there is a “proper way” to store your carrots.

In a video on TikTok, Amanda said: “You’ve probably been storing your carrots the wrong way, let me show you the right thing to do.

“Whether you prefer to buy whole carrots or prefer to grab a bag of baby carrots, you’re probably tossing them in a fridge drawer.“

However, Amanda said the best way to keep carrots fresh is to take them out of their packaging, fill a container with water, put the carrots in and then place them in the middle of the fridge.

Amanda said: “The key is to place them in a container and fill it up with water. They can last four weeks this way.“

Keep your carrots in a water-filled container with a lid, as being exposed to the moisture in the fridge will spoil them.

Make sure to change the water in the container every five to six days, which also helps maintain the carrots’ freshness.

This method will preserve them and extend the shelf life of carrots for weeks, which can help you save money on your food shopping.

Carrots will last a lot longer in a water-filled container as they need a balanced humidity and a steady temperature.

When placed in a fridge drawer, the temperature fluctuations from the drawer opening will impact the quality and the shelf life of carrots.

Likewise, carrots are highly sensitive to humidity changes, and the vegetable drawer in the fridge is designed for higher humidity levels than the rest of the fridge.

If the humidity is too high for carrots, it can lead to them becoming mouldy while a low humidity will cause them to dehydrate and deteriorate.

In Amanda’s comment section, people were amazed that they had been storing their carrots the wrong way for so long.

One user said: “I have learned that I don’t know how to adult. I haven’t stored anything correctly so far!”

Another person commented: “This is very true. I started doing this and it was amazing how long the carrots lasted.”

Someone else wrote: “This is a great idea and it works. I also found out it works great with celery as well!”
