President, PM Modi back Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar after mimicry taunt

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their anguish and strongly condemned the mimicry by an Opposition MP of the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The prime minister called Dhankhar on Wednesday morning to express his support.

Dhankhar shared details of the phone call from the prime minister on his social media handle. “Received a telephone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He expressed great pain over the abject theatrics of some honourable MPs and that too in the sacred Parliament complex yesterday. He told me that he has been at the receiving end of such insults for twenty years and counting but the fact that it could happen to a Constitutional office like the Vice President of India and that too in Parliament was unfortunate,” he said on X.

The Vice President stated that he informed the prime minister, “… the antics of a few won’t prevent me from performing my duty and upholding the principles enshrined in our Constitution. I am committed to those values from the bottom of my heart. None of the insults will make me change my path,” he said.

President Murmu also backed the Vice President. “I was dismayed to see the manner in which our respected Vice President was humiliated in the Parliament complex. Elected representatives must be free to express themselves, but their expression should be within the norms of dignity and courtesy. That has been the Parliamentary tradition we are proud of, and the People of India expect them to uphold it,” she said on X.

Dhankhar expressed his gratitude to the President for her support. “Thank you Rashtrapati ji for your kind words and the timely reminder that basic courtesies (sic) must always remain. I am committed to upholding the Constitutional principles till my last breath. No insults can prevent me from doing so,” he said in his reply.

A visibly perturbed Dhankhar adjourned the House twice within seconds in the first half as the Opposition members trooped into the Well of the House and raised slogans.Later, he slammed Congress and the other Opposition parties in the House on the protest and the mimicry incident.
