A SCOTTISH seaside town has been ranked among the world’s best surfing spots.
Thurso dubbed Scotland‘s equivalent to Hawaii, made the list alongside legendary global hotspots for the water sport.
Scotland is known as a top destination in Europe for hardened surfers, due to the ice-cold waters.
Travel experts ParkSleep have now included Thurso in its round-up of most desirable destinations in the world for the water sport, due to its great waves.
The spot is on the country’s northernmost tip and can also be found on the famous North Coast 500.
Surfing enthusiasts from across the globe are drawn to the bay stretching from Scrabster to Thurso Castle.
It joins locations in Australia, Bali, and the United States in the list of best surf spots.
ParkSleepFly’s study took into account factors such as Instagram tags, coastline length, Google searches, and average sea temperatures to determine the best spots.
It claimed surfing conditions in the area are best during the colder months.
In April 2021, the UK‘s top surfers gathered in Thurso for the British Surfing Cupheld.
It marked the first time the competition was held in the town since the 80s and the first time since Scotland hosted it in 1992.
Three-time Scottish National Surfing Champion Mark Boyd previously stated in an interview: “It really is world-class.
“We get big, heavy, barrelling surf similar to what you expect to find in Hawaii, just without the palm trees.”
