Police force launch fraud investigation into top cop who wore ‘fake’ Falklands War medal

A SECOND police force has launched a criminal investigation into a top officer whose lies about his military service were exposed by The Sun.

Northants Chief Constable Nick Adderley, 57, faces the sack for wearing a Falklands War medal despite being 15 during the 1982 conflict.

The police watchdog began a criminal investigation ahead of a misconduct hearing in May.

Now Staffordshire Police, where he was assistant chief constable from 2015-18, is investigating him for alleged fraud linked to the maintenance of police vehicles.

Adderley and another ex-Staffordshire officer were served with misconduct papers on February 20, says the NN Journal.

An IOPC spokesman said: “We can confirm that two serving police officers have been told they are under criminal investigation as part of ongoing inquiries by Staffordshire Police into alleged fraud linked to the maintenance of police vehicles.

“The investigation is being carried out under the direction of the IOPC.

“The officers have been served with notices telling them they are under criminal investigation and that their conduct is under investigation at the level of gross misconduct.

“Neither of them currently work for Staffordshire Police and both are suspended from their respective forces.”

A Staffs Police spokesman added: “As it’s a directed IOPC investigation, we don’t have primacy and we’re unable to comment.”

The £165,000-a-year chief denies wrongdoing.
