Phillies shake up bullpen, replace struggling reliever who was 2022 playoff star

Despite being out of options, Connor Brogdon’s early-season troubles forced the Phillies’ hands and the relief pitcher was designated for assignment on Wednesday.

Ricardo Pinto was called up to take Brogdon’s place. The 30-year-old Pinto signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies in February and appeared in four games with the club in major league spring training as a non-roster invitee, striking out three hitters in 5 2/3 innings.

He previously played with the Phillies in 2017, posting a 7.89 ERA in 25 games.

A 2022 postseason standout, Brogdon was sent down to the minors early last season and he did not return. Out of options, the right-hander made the club out of spring training but he couldn’t find his previous form.

The end came on Monday when Brogdon was summoned to pitch in his third game in four days with the game tied in the top of the 10th inning against the Cincinnati Reds. He walked the first two batters he faced and allowed a grand slam to Spencer Steer after falling behind in the count.

Overall, he walked six and gave up three hits and six runs in two innings. This was Brogdon’s fifth season with the Phillies, posting a 10-8 record and 3.88 ERA throughout his career.

The highlight of his Phillies’ career came in 2022 when he was a key part of the bullpen for the National League champions. He posted a 2.08 postseason ERA with 13 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.

It’s possible Brogdon could remain with the Phillies’ organization to work out his struggles in the minor leagues if he clears waivers and isn’t traded.

The Phillies are off to a disappointing 1-3 start to the season.
