Overcooked turkey is a sure sign of Derry Christmas

The Northern Irish are the most likely to overcook the festive bird on Christmas Day, according to a survey for electronics giant Samsung.

And at a “Derry Christmas” the dry meat will not be saved by the gravy, as Ulster folk also top the regional list of those who struggle to get it right.

And they were also the most likely to forget an element for the big dinner.

The study carried out for electronics giant Samsung revealed 47 per cent of Britons stress over preparing Christmas dinner, with
27 per cent saying cooking is the most challenging part of the festive season.

The breakdown shows 26 per cent of people in Northern Ireland overcook the turkey, followed by 17 per cent in London and 16 per cent in North-West England.

The Welsh struggle the most with prepping vegetables, with 19 per cent of those polled citing this as an issue, followed by 13 per cent in the East, North-East and North-West.

And 18 per cent of Geordies said they struggled with getting the gravy right.

Overall, not having enough oven space was the biggest issue for those in the East Midlands, the South-East, South-West, East of England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Elsewhere the main struggle was with timing issues.

To help reduce the stress, Samsung has a smart oven which uses AI to allow people to remotely check on their turkey’s progress via their smartphone or TV.

And some good news for Northern Ireland, it also alerts users when something is burning – and how to cook dishes simultaneously at varying temperatures.

Tanya Weller, from Samsung Electronics, said: “No matter where you live in the UK, the Samsung Series 7 Bespoke AI Oven can help you overcome cooking challenges so you can enjoy a stress-free feast.”
