Our Flag Means Death Canceled After Two Seasons at Max

HBO’s gay pirate series has walked the plank. Max series Our Flag Means Death will end after two seasons as it has been canceled. Unlike some other cancelations in which it is moved off its featured platform, the Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby show will remain on the streaming service.

The series was based on the real-life pirate Stede Bonnet (Darby). He went from a life of wealth and royalty to becoming a pirate who was known as the Gentleman Pirate. The show took a comedic spin with his odd yet progressive take on being a captain. The main plot became a love story between him and the fearsome Black Beard (Waititi). Episodes also went into the dysfunctional family that was Stede’s crew. The two leads were joined by Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones.

Max Axes Three Season Plan After It Canceled Our Flag Means Death After Two Seasons

Creator David Jenkins had a plan for three seasons. Although we won’t get that due to Our Flag Means Death getting canceled, we have an idea of that vision from Jenkins. Talking to Inverse after the finale of season 2, he confirmed it would have been the finale. If he got to make it, the evolution of the relationship between Black Beard and Stede would become something like “people in their 20s trying to learn it if they want to move in together.”

The wait for fans is an unfortunate one. Season 2 had an emotional finale that was bittersweet. The finale aired on October 26. No reasons were given as to what led to Our Flag Means Death getting canceled or why the decision took this long.

Our Flag Means Death is available on Max. As the fates of deceased shows go up in the air, like how Westworld was removed from the platform in 2022, it is best to watch it now before things change.
