Onions and garlic will keep fresh for six months if stored in the proper place

Onions and garlic are spoiling before they should be as many people are unknowingly storing these vegetables in the wrong place

WRAP, a British charity dedicated to cutting down on food waste, has discovered UK households are throwing away 6.7 million tonnes of food per year, and over 60 percent of that food could have been saved if it had been managed better.

If your onions or garlic are going soft, soggy or even mouldy before their time then it may be because you are storing these vegetables in the fridge, which is one of the worst places to keep them.

Onions and garlic will quickly expire due to excessive moisture build-up as fridges have a very humid environment. The cold temperature in the fridge will also turn the starches in onion into sugar, leading to these vegetables deteriorating within days.

Olga, a chef and founder of Olgas Flavor Factory, shared that the best place to store onions and garlic is somewhere cool and dry such as a drawer, cupboard or pantry.

Stop Waste, a food waste charity stated that onions and garlic will stay fresh for up to three or six months if they are stored properly.

The experts at Stop Food Waste said: “Keep onions and garlic in a basket or paper bag where air can circulate.

“Store in a cool, dark place for up to 3-6 months. Never keep these items in sealed plastic as it will quickly cause spoilage.”
