Safety and security is a primary consideration for the majority of British expats. While Iceland is usually named the world’s safest country, it’s not the only European destination with a low crime rate.
According to a recent study by the team at International SOS, Norway is one of the world’s safest countries to live and visit.
The country was named the third safest destination in the world, coming just behind Iceland and Luxembourg.
Norway has a relatively low violent crime rate and one of the world’s lowest murder rates, making it one of Europe’s safest countries.
While that might make it sound idyllic, the Nordic country is far from a great place to live according to some of the expats who moved there.
Norway was ranked as Europe’s worst country to be a British expat in the latest InterNations Expat Insider survey.
Expats felt the country was unaffordable and over 60 percent felt that the general cost of living was too high.
More than three in 10 expats said their disposable household income wasn’t enough to lead a comfortable life.
Expats also felt that local residents weren’t that welcoming towards newcomers. More than half of the expats surveyed said they found it hard to make local friends.
Many were unhappy with their social life while Norway’s culinary scene was also slated by expats.
Although the Scandinavian country scored high marks for its natural environment, expats were unimpressed with culture and nightlife.
