NHS doctor says ‘weight loss’ snack is ‘almost like dessert’

For people trying to lose weight, the temptation of their favourite snack can often be all too much. But, not all snacks have to be ‘bad’ for you.

A doctor has shared his newfound favourite snack he deems “the greatest”. Dr Ahmed, known online as @Dra_says, shared a clip on TikTok explaining how he believes quark might be a ‘godsend’ for those who have a sweet tooth but are looking to lose weight.

He only discovered the treat after a patient of his told him about it during their own weight loss journey. He said: “I saw the macros and I was amazed. It’s got 80 calories in it, 15g of protein and 4g of sugar.

“It’s very thick and creamy, makes me very full and it tastes delicious. It almost tastes like a dessert.”

The NHS GP then showed a pot of Kvarg, a product made by Nestle using quark. Although it tastes like yoghurt and is typically found in that aisle, quark is actually fresh cheese.

The high protein content of quark is what gives it such filling power. Supplying the body with protein reduces ghrelin, the hormone that makes you feel hungry.

Instead, the body is flooded with leptin. This hormone does the opposite of ghrelin, sending signals to your brain that tell it you’re full, so you resist those temptations to snack.

Quark is also naturally low in calories, making it an ideal treat between meals if you follow a calorie-controlled diet. Another benefit is the high calcium count, which leads to healthy teeth and bones.

People have also reported feeling like their digestive system is much healthier after swapping out yoghurts for quark. This is due to the level of live bacteria that reaches the gut.

You can grab plain quark from Aldi for as little as 65p, but bigger brands can typically retail for more when flavourings are added. The versatile treat can be enjoyed in a number of ways.

Some TikTok users shared their recipes that use quark as a substitute when making pancakes and pizza bases. Others show that it can be eaten on it own or simply topped with your favourite fruits.

While quark may help you feel fuller for longer, potentially helping you lose weight, it is not a miracle cure. Exercise and following a healthy diet is crucial to maintaining a healthy weight. Always speak to your doctor before making any drastic diet and lifestyle changes.
