Narendra Modi: PM Modi, Oman Sultan discuss Gaza crisis, back 2-state solution as way forward | India News

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi and the visiting Oman Sultan, Haitham bin Tarik, discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict with focus on the humanitarian crisis, terrorism and the need for a two-state solution to facilitate peace. The visit by the Sultan to India, the first in 26 years, saw the countries signing six MoUs, including one for sharing of intelligence to tackle money laundering and terror financing.
Calling it a historic day in bilateral ties, Modi announced adoption of a new ‘India-Oman Joint Vision-A Partnership for Future’ with concrete action-points to take forward cooperation in 10 different areas. The PM expressed hope that the two countries will soon sign a free trade agreement, adding a new chapter to their economic cooperation.
“I am glad that discussions on CEPA agreement are ongoing between the two sides. Two rounds of these talks have been successfully completed in which consensus has been reached on many important issues,” said Modi.
The Sultan’s visit was the first by a Gulf head of state since the Israel-Hamas war broke out. Oman has sought an independent probe into Israel’s actions in Gaza and, expectedly, and as foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra confirmed, the situation in Gaza was an important focus area for the leaders in the meeting.
Both condemned terrorism while discussing other aspects of the conflict like the need to address the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Gaza, and to respect humanitarian law. Acknowledging the gravity of Gaza crisis, India this week voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution that sought an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
“There was a shared appreciation of the challenge that both countries face from the emerging multiple dimensions of the conflict, including the catastrophic humanitarian situation, the challenge of terrorism, and the larger need to achieve a two-state solution as a way forward,” said Kwatra, adding that the two leaders had productive talks.
The joint statement issued after the meeting didn’t refer to the situation in West Asia but said the leaders discussed regional and global issues of mutual concern and underlined the need to abide by international law, shun violent extremism and resolve conflicts peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy.
The talks saw focus on enhancing defence cooperation as Oman remains India’s closest defence and Indian Ocean maritime security partner in the Gulf which has provided India access to the strategic Duqm port. Kwatra said Duqm provides a logistical base for cooperation between the two countries in the field of maritime cooperation, including humanitarian disaster relief.
The Joint Vision adopted will focus on areas like maritime cooperation and connectivity, energy security and green energy, space, technologies, and applications and digital payments. The two leaders also strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and agreed that there cannot be any justification for any act of terror for any reason whatsoever.
