About 175million Pot Noodles a year are made at the factory in Crumlin, a 5,000-population town in the Welsh valleys, and an “awful” stench has been reported there on and off for 30 years.

However it is thought to have nothing to do with the dehydrated snacks, and instead comes from the area’s shut mines.

Robert Morgan, who works at Bullen Trading, said: “We notice it every day, ‘the Crumlin Stink’. We just get on with it.”

Caerphilly Council said it has referred the matter to Natural Resources Wales, which is now investigating.

But colliery expert Bill Davison said there was nothing to worry about.

He said: “An egg-like smell emanates from the vegetation.

“At the bottom of the main shafts you have stagnant water running out and vegetation with chemical processes that rise up into the atmosphere.

“It doesn’t pose a risk to health.”

Pot Noodle maker Unilever was asked to comment.
