The return of Baig along with his wife Safeena Baig, district development council chairperson in Baramulla, to the PDP on Syed’s eight death anniversary did not go down well with many in the party, but Mufti welcomed him back saying, “Baig sahib is an elder brother. Many things happen in a family. We should forget the past and look at the future.”
Baig addressed the congregation briefly at the graveyard, and said, “I didn’t leave the PDP… I was quiet for some time, and silence is better in some circumstances.”
He was among the members who founded the PDP in 1998 and later he served as deputy chief minister and finance minister when the party was in the government in J&K between 2003-2008.
Baig’s re-emergence on the political scene of J&K is being seen in context of the upcoming parliamentary elections and possible assembly election in the Union Territory later this year and may give the PDP a shot in the arm in northern Kashmir.
